About Department of Defense

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is the federal agency responsible for coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government directly related to national security and the Armed Forces. As the largest employer in the world, the DoD oversees the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force, along with numerous defense agencies and commands. Its mission is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure the nation’s security. With a focus on innovation, readiness, and resilience, the Department plays a critical role in advancing U.S. interests and maintaining global stability through strategic operations, technological advancement, and international partnerships.

The Challenge

A major U.S. Department of Defense program needed a secure, scalable compute solution to support operations across 186 locations. The hardware had to be compact and rugged enough to perform in harsh, often mobile environments and still deliver the performance for high speed data capture and secure transmission.

Several key challenges had to be addressed:

  • End of life hardware constraints: The program’s existing compute infrastructure was based on end of life technology, so a future-proof solution with long term support was required.

  • Remote deployment and management: With systems spread across a wide geographic footprint, the program needed to deploy, monitor and manage devices without on-site personnel -  saving time, cost and logistical complexity.

  • Power variability: Equipment had to operate on both 12V and 24V power systems, with voltage regulation to prevent instability – especially in legacy vehicles with inconsistent power output.

  • Data integrity under power loss: To protect sensitive data and maintain operational integrity, systems needed to perform controlled shutdowns when power was cut, even in mobile or field-based deployments.

  • High throughput storage for visual data: The program required edge devices to support multiple high resolution camera inputs - demanding high read/write speeds and isolated SSD storage to meet data security and performance requirements.

  • Regulatory and environmental compliance: All solutions had to meet strict safety and quality standards, including E-Mark certification and manufacturing under ISO9001 guidelines.

In short, the United States Department of Defense needed more than just powerful computing - they needed a rugged, remote-ready platform purpose built for secure, long term deployment in defense environments.

The Solution

To meet the customer’s requirements, Simply NUC designed a number of custom solutions that addressed both the short and long term needs of the program.

Working closely with the program’s primary OEM partner, Simply NUC developed a platform that delivered high performance, remote manageability and environmental resilience – all in a compact form factor.

The result was the extremeEDGE Sserver™ EE-1000, a sub-1 lb device with three NIC ports for flexible networking and, crucially,  Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) functionality. This was a first of its kind in a small form factor compute device, allowing for complete remote deployment, monitoring and troubleshooting even when the device was powered off or inaccessible.

Scaling New Heights

After initial field deployments, operational feedback highlighted the need for more processing power and secure fiber connectivity. In response, Simply NUC designed and released the EE-2000, a performance enhanced model wit
